Management/Administration

  • C3: The C3 (Cluster Command and Control) tool suite was developed at Oak Ridge National Lab and implements a number of command line based tools that aid in the operation and management of clusters.

  • Cfengine: Cfengine is a tool for administration and configuration of large (or small) networks of computers. It uses the idea of classes to define and automate the configuration and maintenance of systems.

  • Clunix: The clunix tools are a free, GPL'd set of utilities for managing a Linux cluster. The components are a perl based load balancer, a php based web interface for monitoring the state of the cluster, and a daemon.

  • ClusterWorX: ClusterWorX, from the folks at Linux NetworX, is a management and monitoring package, that supports customized monitoring and notification, disk cloning, node management, and more.

  • openMosixview: openMosixview is a complete rewrite of the original Mosixview code. It is a cluster management GUI for an openMosix cluster.

  • Performance Co-Pilot: PCP is from the folks at SGI, and can serve as both a monitoring and management system for a system or cluster.

  • PowerCockpit: PowerCockpit is a tool for installing and managing large groups of servers.

  • SUT: SUT (Scalable UNIX tools for Clusters) is a collection of standard UNIX utilities, like ls, rm, cp, etc., that are targeted at cluster use. These tools are based on a paper by William Gropp and Ewing Lusk entitled Unix Tools on Massively Parallel Processors.

  • Webmin: Webmin is a web based interface for system administration of Unix systems.


Job Management

  • BProc: BProc, The Beowulf Distributed Process Space, is a set of kernel modifications, utilities, and libraries which allow a user to start processes on other machines in a Beowulf-style cluster. Remote processes started with this mechanism appear in the process table of the front end machine in the cluster.



Schedulers

  • Condor: Condor is a software package that does job scheduling and load balancing. It is available for most Unixes, and a port to NT is currently underway.

  • Grid Engine: The Gride Engine Project is an open source project based on Sun's commercia product, "Sun Grid Engine." Grid Engine is Distributed Resource Management software, useful for balancing, prioritizing, queueing tasks on on compute nodes and more.

  • Maui: Maui is an advanced scheduler for clusters and supercomputers. It can support various fairness policies, dynamic priorities, extensive reservations, and fairshare.


Batch Managers

  • LSF: LSF is for managing batch processing, and is available for many different platforms.

  • OpenPBS: OpenPBS is an open implementation of PBS.

  • PBSPro: PBSPro is an enterprise quality implementation of PBS.

  • Torque: Torque (the Terascale Open-source Resource QUEue manager) is a resource manager based on OpenPBS that provides control over batch jobs and distributed compute nodes.

  • PBS (Portable Batch System) is a batch queueing and load balancing system originally developed for NASA. It is available for a variety of platforms, with various implementations available.


Miscellaneous

  • C-JDBC: C-JDBC, Clustered Java DataBase Connectivity, is database cluster middlware that allows any application to transparently access a cluster of databases through JDBC. C-JDBC is a software implementation of RAIDb (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Databases), and allows for replication, availability, and load balancing among several nodes.

  • Linux Terminal Server Project: The name pretty much says it all. The LTSP is a way to run thin client computers in a Linux environment.

  • Paradyn: Paradyn is a tool for measuring the performance of sequential, distributed, and parallel programs. It can monitor large, long running programs and provides facilities for helping to automatically find performance problems in complex parallel programs. It is developed in the Computer Science Department of the University of Wisconsin (the same folks that wrote the Condor scheduler).
